Memorial Day in Hiram
I was honored once again to photograph the annual Memorial Day observance here in Hiram, Ohio. As customary, the parade stepped off from Hayden Street and proceeded up Wakefield Road to Fairview Cemetery. Mayor Anne Haynam presided. Hiram Township was represented by Trustees Steve Pancost and Debra Blake along with Jack Groselle. Boy Scout and Cub Scouts were on hand to lead the pledge of allegiance. Reverend Chris McCreight gave the invocation and benediction. The Crestwood High School Scarlet Guard marched in the parade and played a selection of patriotic songs during the ceremony. Military veterans Sam Bixler, Debra Blake and Jean Broge read narratives of some of the Civil War veterans buried in our cemetery that were killed in action. At the conclusion of the ceremony, members of the public were encouraged to plant flowers at the many graves of veterans throughout the cemetery. This event is rich in the small town atmosphere which I thrive upon. Memories of it linger long after the day has passed.
